Playing DRM-protected video on Samsung SmartTV Platform

November 9, 2013

Samsung platform supports both PlayReady and Widevine DRMs. So when it came to enabling DRM on the platform, we had to decide to choose one. PlayReady isn’t supported on 2010 devices – so the decision became simpler. We decided to use Widevine with a goal to reach the maximum number of devices. The first hurdle in this integration came from limited documentation on Widevine integration on Samsung. Some research indicated that it is not a mere parameter change like Samsung has for some popular formats. For example, adding “|COMPONENT=HLS” to the end of a playback URL automatically tunes the Samsung […]

Ensuring High Availability in our OTT Video Platform

September 14, 2013

Web service failure is an unavoidable part of the Internet world. Any Internet-based platform which is not designed to withstand failures will eventually fail. As an OTT-Platform provider, this applies to us well. So when it came to design our platform, the architects included availability as a key design goal. While building robust services with proper development practices and adding service redundancy for each service was a clear engineering directive, feedback on service availability and performance was deemed equally important. We had a choice of going with existing third-party service monitoring framework or build our own. A quick analysis clearly […]

Launching the first 3D Video App on Panasonic

July 30, 2013

Enabling 3D playback on Panasonic devices is an entirely different challenge compared to doing so on Samsung. While Samsung had native support for such playback, getting the information about how to get it to work was tough. In contrast, with Panasonic, there was no information about whether Panasonic even offers 3D triggering capability in its API. Initially, we started working with the information that there was no way of triggering 3D mode in Panasonic TVs from the app. Under that assumption, the app was designed to ask users to manually switch to 3D mode before starting playback. What we didn’t […]

Supporting PlayReady video playback in Roku

April 25, 2013

We recently got a requirement from one of our studio clients – an ability to play DRM content on Roku. This entails not just selecting the appropriate DRM, but also built the complete supporting infrastructure. In context of our platform, this meant the following: 1) Selecting the appropriate DRM format 2) Ensure that only EMS-authorized users could play the content 3) Keep the License Key server and the key exchange interaction hidden from the prying eyes Since Roku does not support Widevine, PlayReady was the way to go. While testing the device capabilities, we discovered that older Roku devices (Roku-1) […]

3D Application Requirements on Samsung Smart TV

February 10, 2013

We were very excited when we were asked to build an application that plays 3D content on Samsung SmartTV Platform. The challenge of working on something that few others, if any, have got to work is always welcome for our engineering team. The moments of joy and despair, the extreme highs and lows of working on such projects are unparalleled. The first good news was that Samsung SmartTV Platform did support playback of Side-by-Side (SBS) 3D videos. Getting 3D videos to play was slightly more involved than playing a normal 2D video. The player does not auto-detect the 3D encoding […]
